Depression

Its normal for everyone to feel a bit down at times. Usually we feel better after a while. But some people feel down for a long time, or so much that they think about hurting or even killing themselves. This is called depression. Depression is more than just being unhappy.

When someone is depressed they often go through periods of feeling really bad. Something causes this to start each time - it might be something really serious, like being abused, or it might be something like arguing with a friend.

During a period of depression nothing anyone tells them makes them feel any better. They might cry a lot, not want to go out, or feel life is not worth living. Some people just don't want to do anything, eat too much or too little, or start arguing about everything.

If you think you are suffering from depression there are lots of things that can help. Doing something you enjoy can make you feel better for a short time. Doing some exercise helps a lot of people. Listening to happy music also helps. You could also talk to a good friend, an adult you trust, or God about it.

If someone you know suffers from depression it can be quite hard for you. Try to be sympathetic to them, and don't criticise them for it. Be patient with them because they probably won't just snap out of it. Ask them to talk about how they feel, and try to encourage them to look for help.

The website Young Minds contains more about depression.
