Drugs 2
This page give information of different types of drugs. If you want to find the general information on drugs, see Drugs 1. Cocain is made from the leaves of coca bush, grown in Bolivia, Peru and Colombia. It is usually a white powder, and gets 'snorted'. It can be very impure, as it gets mixed with anything from talcum powder to sugar or even bleach. It is sometimes smoked, this is known as crack. Cocaine is very addictive. The more people take, the more they need. Crack is even more addictive. The body ends up needing more and more or serious withdrawal pains occur. It is possible to overdose on Cocain, which usually causes death. If it is snorted over a period of time the wall between the nostrils in the nose gets damaged, and can even decay completely. It does not grow back. LSD is a man-made drug. It is colourless and tasteless. It usually comes soaked on small squares of paper, called tabs, which are decorated with a picture. LSD gives the user a 'trip', where they hallucinate and lose touch with reality. This can last a number of hours. Sometimes it can give a 'bad trip', where the user gets paranoid or extremely frightened. LSD users sometimes get flashbacks, often days or months after they have taken the drug. There have also been cases where LSD users thought they could fly, and jumped out of windows. LSD can be addictive. The body can also get used to it, so needs more to have the same effect the next time. Cannabis comes from the cannabis plant. It comes in some different forms - grass, made from the leaves of the plant, and hashish, made from the resin, are the most common. Cannabis is usually smoked. It can cause the user to feel slightly drunk, more relaxed, or ease pain. People often think that cannabis is a harmless drug. It is not. It is more dangerous than cigarettes, as it is more likely to give you lung cancer. People who use cannabis and cigarettes are most likely to get cancer. It can also cause paranoia or cause confusion. It is addictive - about 1 in 10 users get strongly addicted, while over half of cannabis users get some sort of addiction. Ecstasy is a man made drug. It usually comes in a small coloured tablet with a logo on it. It is supposed to give energy and make the user more aware of music, which is why it is often taken at raves. Ecstasy has caused deaths because of overheating. Users cannot tell how warm they are and can cook themselves to death. Alcohol makes this even worse. Ecstasy can also cause water problems, either having too little or too much. It is extremely difficult for the body to get rid of the drug, and using it regularly can cause damage to the liver. Ecstasy can also cause brain damage and loss of memory. People can become ecstasy addicts, always wanting the feeling it gives them. They end up taking more and more to get the same effect. Amphetamines is the name given a group of drugs with effects like adrenalin, one of the bodies hormones. There are three main types; the most common is speed. Amphetamines vary in appearance, usually because they are impure. It is often brown or orange, and tends to be a powder. Amphetamines are very addictive. If they are used regularly the body gets used to them, so more needs to be taken to get the same effect. Users can suffer from depression and long lasting tiredness. Heavy users can feel suicidal. Heroin is an extremely powerful drug produced from opium poppy seeds. It comes in different forms, often a white powder or brown paste. It is often impure and mixed with something like chalk or flour. Heroin can be taken by smoking, snorting or injecting. Because it is so addictive most users who start smoking or snorting end up injecting. Many users catch AIDS or other diseases through sharing needles. Nearly three quarters of heroin users are addicted to it. Many end up dying by overdosing. Other effects are damaging the body by injecting all the time, liver failure, heart failure, and blood infections. |
