Kriss Akabusi

Kriss Akabusi won the Hurdles Gold Medal in the 1990 European Championships. He went on to win Gold for the relay in Tokyo in 1991. Since then he has appeared on many TV programmes, including 'Record Breakers'.

Kriss has known many difficult times in his life. At a very young age he was abandoned in England by his Nigerian parents, when they had to return to their country which was at war. Kriss spent the next part of his life moving from one foster parent to another, before finding himself in a children's home in Enfield, north London. He was only eight years old.

Even though he had an incredibly successful career, the most important event of Kriss's life was becoming a Christian. It was 1986 at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. There was a Bible in his hotel room, and while he was in Scotland he read it all. Soon afterwards he was training in America when he decided to follow Jesus.

Kriss says that becoming a Christian did not solve all his problems - in fact it actually created some. His wife is not a Christian and he finds this hard.

Kriss says:
"Throughout my life I have constantly sought for victory, using the strongest determination to push through every obstacle to win the race, and overcome every difficulty. It has not always been easy as a Christian to let God have total control, and I'm often eager to sort things out for myself. I have realised over the years though, that most of the time I can't, and I just have to let go and trust God.
